Hide-and-Go-Seek With Mickey!

We have two words that will change the way you enjoy ©Disney forever: Hidden Mickeys. Hidden Mickeys are the partial or complete impression of Mickey strategically placed by Disney Imagineers to blend into the background of the park. That means, if you keep your eyes peeled as you wander through any ©Disney Theme Park, you will begin to notice random inconspicuous images of Mickey Mouse. At first you may see one or two clever mentions of the mouse but trust us- these babies are everywhere! You will find them etched into sidewalks, laid with stones, painted in murals, you name it.
There are two theories to how these images made their way into the woodwork of the park. The official history says that in the late 1980’s Imagineers began slipping images of Mickey Mouse into their creations just for laughs. It was a fun game that they played to see who could come up with the cleverest way to disguise the familiar shape of the mouse. However, some people say that Hidden Mickeys started with the conception of Epcot in the late 1970’s. It is said that ©Disney management felt that Mickey did not belong in Epcot, and the Imagineers disagreed. To bypass the officials, they snuck his presence into the park through Hidden Mickeys.
Today Hidden Mickeys have become a tradition at Walt Disney World and management encourages Imagineers to incorporate them into new work. That means that no matter which story is true; guests like you can take part in the hunt!
A list of Hidden Mickeys can be found at the guest relations desk of any Walt Disney World theme park. There is also a book written about the phenomena called Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World’s Best Kept Secrets, by Steven Barrett.
