“Earthquake – The Big One” officially shook guests for the last time on November 5, and it will soon reopen with the “heart-pounding thrills” of “Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride… Starring You.” Scheduled to commence operation in December, Disaster! will bring guests an unprecedented experience that “combines the best, most dramatic elements of Earthquake with new blockbuster celebrity talent, new ride elements, new digital technologies, interactive components and a new storyline,” according to a Universal Orlando press release.

Earthquake was one of the original rides at Universal Studios and has been around since the park opened in 1990. The realistic subway earthquake scene was based on the major motion picture “Earthquake” and gave guests a peek into movie special effects with its floods, fires and sheer destruction. All of that will be found in Disaster!, plus a more interactive feel that is evident in other Universal attractions that have been recently updated.

The Back to the Future ride at Universal also permanently closed the doors on its Deloreans this year and has already been closed down for several months. Its replacement is going to be a ride based on “The Simpsons” TV show, and that one is scheduled to open next spring.

So come in December to celebrate the holidays and experience an entertaining Disaster!, and come again next year to ride The Simpsons.
