New Years at Disney
New Year’s Eve at Disney is one of the busiest days of the year for the four theme parks. But with celebrations going on all across property, there are many different ways for you to welcome in 2008. And as the New Year is sneaking upon us, it is never too early to start planning where you will be having your celebration. For help in planning that, here are the hours and events for New Year’s Eve at the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks (subject to change).
The Magic Kingdom Park will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, with an Extra Magic Hour from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Parade will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and the “SpectroMagic” nighttime parade will happen twice that evening, at 7:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Wishes will grace the sky at 8:30 p.m., while the special Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks extravaganza will start 10 minutes before midnight and will include a special countdown to the New Year and a post-midnight finale. Please note however that the Magic Kingdom Park fills to capacity pretty early in the day on New Year’s Eve and usually does not re-open for guests until late in the afternoon or early evening.
Epcot is also another popular destination for New Year’s crowds because of its expansive restaurant options for the evening and also because of the special Illuminations: Reflections of Earth fireworks presentation at midnight. This year, Epcot will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. (the World Showcase does not open until 9:30 a.m.), and Illuminations will take place twice, both at 7:30 p.m. and 11:40 p.m. Once it hits midnight, however, watch out for the special ending to this show that will knock your socks off!
The Disney-MGM Studios is usually not the first place that people think of to visit on New Year’s Eve, but this park does have plenty of special events throughout the day to make it a great park option during the afternoon and evening hours. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, which is presented from 6:00 p.m. until midnight, is still gracing New York Street at the Studios at this time, while the Hollywood Holly-Day Parade goes on at 3:00 p.m. There are also three performances of Fantasmic! to take in as well – at 6:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. – and a special midnight fireworks show aptly titled, “Lights! Camera! Happy New Year!” which takes place right at midnight.
And finally, if you are looking for a place to spend the morning or afternoon, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. While this park cannot have a fireworks show due to the animals, you should be sure to catch Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade as it makes its way through the park at 3:45 p.m.
The theme parks are not the only places with celebrations at the Walt Disney World Resort, however. If you are looking to dance your way into 2008, head over to the Atlantic Dance Hall at Disney’s BoardWalk. Here, you can have a champagne toast at midnight while you dance to your favorite songs of the 80’s, 90’s and today. Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island has an even bigger celebration on hand. Beginning at 8:00 p.m. and lasting until 2:00 a.m., this party is an all-access ticket that will get you unlimited access to all of the clubs, a midnight champagne toast and a fireworks display to ring in the New Year. Ticket prices for this celebration (which are already on sale) are $99 plus tax, and also include food such as skewered shrimp, seared beef medallions and smoked salmon.
Over at Downtown Disney’s West Side, Cirque du Soleil also offers two New Year’s Eve performances, both of which include a souvenir program with a limited edition photo insert, a champagne toast and a special evening finale for both shows at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Seating prices range from $95.85-$148.04 for adults and $82.01-$123.54 for children. Tickets can be ordered by calling (407) 939-7719.
And finally, if you are looking for an even more unique way to ring in the New Year, Disney also offers specialty cruises that give you a lakefront view of either the Magic Kingdom Park or Epcot’s midnight fireworks displays. Prices for these personal pontoon boat cruises range from $495.01 for a basic package, which can accommodate up to eight people, to $545.01 for a premium package that seats up to 10.
