UP Could Win an Oscar?!?
How great would it be to see a Disney film win an Oscar? Back in the day, Walt Disney earned a total of 26 Oscars with a record four in a year. But the thing is the Oscars Disney won for Fantasia and Snow White were “honorary” Oscars, in which the films were recognized for their incredible innovations in story and animation. It wasn’t until Beauty and the Beast that Disney received an official nomination, but still did not win an Oscar for Best Picture (it was however, the first animated movie to ever win a Golden Globe for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy.) So now that the awards season is upon us, everyone is already talking about the return of animation to the world of cinema and how that would factor in with the awards season. One of the biggest films getting buzz regarding the Oscars is Disney’s very own UP! You’ve probably seen the merchandise at the Disney theme parks or even taken your own balloon ride at Downtown Disney’s newest attraction; so there’s no hiding the fact this Pixar film was an instant hit.The Hollywood Reporter has a full page ad asking “The Academy” to consider UP! for an Academy Award nomination. We think there’s no problem with getting a nomination, but to have the film win an Oscar would be a great moment in Disney history. The Hollywood Reporter has been singing UP!’s praises since it came out, saying: "Winsome, touching and arguably the funniest Pixar effort ever, this gorgeously rendered, high-flying adventure is a tidy 90-minute distillation of all the signature touches that came before it." That’s a great compliment coming from one of the most respected magazines in the biz!
As to whether or not the film will be nominated and/or win the Oscar, we’ll just have to wait and see. It was Pixar’s 10th film but the first to be released in Disney Digital 3-D. Directed by Pete Docters, the film centers around a young boy scout named Russell and a grumpy old man named Carl that embark on an adventure to South America to fulfill the wishes of both Carl’s hero and Russell’s deceased wife. It’s truly a heartwarming story that was well written and visually put together by Pixar’s brilliant team. If you haven’t seen it yet, head to the movies then check out the special Up! goodies available at the Walt Disney World Resort!
