Harry Potter Beats Mickey
We all know that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has worked wonders for Universal Studios so far this summer. The wildly popular attraction at Islands of Adventure has already boosted Universal’s attendance for the first time in two years. But is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as popular as Mickey and all of his Disney magic? Perhaps it is.
Walt Disney World just announced their earnings report for the second quarter and it appears that Harry Potter has beat out Mickey Mouse. While Universal’s attendance grew 2 percent during the second quarter, Disney’s dropped 2 percent. But keep in mind there are a few things we should realize before we high five and congratulate Universal.
First, Universal benefits from easier comparisons because it had a much weaker second quarter last year. Second, Disney and Universal operate on different fiscal calendars, so the quarters aren’t exactly aligned. The difference in time helped Universal’s results by including more of the travel rush around Easter but also hurt Universal by robbing it of an extra week of Wizarding World.
But still, Universal is gloating from outgaining Disney World, the first time since late 2008. Plus, per-capita guests spending jumped 14 percent at Universal thanks to sales of potter-themed snacks and souvenirs.
But since we love all Orlando theme parks and like to think they all help each other out, we must say that there is evidence that while Universal has outgained Disney in this quarter, the movie-based theme park is also helping out Disney World. How so, you ask? Consider Disney World’s performance against Disneyland’s. While attendance at Disney World fell 2 percent, it fell 4 percent at its sister park in California. That’s the first time attendance at Disney World has outperformed attendance at the California Resort in two years.
Point being, although Universal has earned bragging rights for this quarter, Disney World still seems to be bringing in the masses, even more so than Disneyland. Perhaps it’s because Disney is a mere miles away from Universal and families are making a stop at both theme parks during their vacations. Or, perhaps Universal’s lines have become too long forcing families to switch to Disney for the day. But either way, Universal seems to be playing a bigger role in Disney’s attendance, than they realize.
But in the end we believe both Orlando theme parks are just as worthy to be visited as the next one and we hope you’ll spend your remaining summer days discovering the movies and the magic at both places. Because after all, the two really can’t even be compared and you should experience both to get the full affect of what Orlando really has to offer!
