Inside the Tomorrowland Speedway at Magic Kingdom
What little kid doesn’t dream of getting behind the wheel of a race car and testing out their driving skills? Regardless of whether you’re a racing fan or not, kids seem to be fascinated with cars and driving. Luckily, the Tomorrowland Speedway at Disney’s Magic Kingdom ® lets kids (and the inner kid in you) put the petal to the metal and make that dream a reality!
Walt Disney World ® must have known from the beginning how popular a race car attraction would be because Tomorrowland Speedway is one of the original attractions that opened with Magic Kingdom ® on October 1, 1971. And in that nearly 42 years, guests of all ages have loved visiting the track that has been designed to look like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to experience its classic racing marquees and replicas of Indianapolis 500-style racecars as well as the history of Indy racing through photos of the Yard of Bricks, the Scoring and Timing Pylon, Gasoline Alley and the wing and wheel logo. You’ll be able to experience all of this racing fun in the queue as you make your way to the loading pit.
After winding your way through the queue, you’ll eventually enter the loading area, which offers even more Indianapolis Motor Speedway history including panels of three annual Indianapolis Motor Speedway races – the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400 and the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. Other panels in the area depict races around the moon, Saturn, and other out-of-this-world destinations.
Once you’ve learned all you can about Indianapolis Motor Speedway riders will strap themselves into one of dozens of multi-colored speedsters equipped with a real-working gas pedal and steering wheel and wait for the wave of the white-checkered flag. Once that flag drops, you’ll speed along the 4/10 mile track at 7 miles per hour around twists and turns just like in a real race. Along the way, listen as world famous announcer Tom Carnegie calls out the race from sound speakers positioned around the track and catch a glimpse of Space Mountain! After you cross the finish line, you’ll enter Victory Circle and get an up-close look of the Indianapolis 500 logo and a see a display of a winning racecar. Don’t forget to grab your Official Speedway License at the end your drive.
If you’d rather sit in the stands and watch the race, spectators can experience all of the fun of Tomorrowland Speedway from the observation bridge, or from outside of the attraction along the route.
