Discovery Island
There are many things Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park is, but one thing it is not – not a zoo! This theme park brings together a unique collection of world-class attractions, rides, shows and parades and mixes them in with the excitement of seeing exotic wild animals in re-creations of their natural habitats. And while Walt Disney’s love of animals might have gone previously untapped before the opening of this park on April 22, 1998, it is evident as soon as you step foot inside the park and enter the first main area of the park, the Oasis and Discovery Island, that this park is dedicated to animals and animal conservation.
The Oasis is a small set of walkways filled with animal habitats that lead guests to the main area of the park, Discovery Island. Much like Main Street, U.S.A. at the Magic Kingdom Park, Discovery Island is home to the park’s icon, the Tree of Life, great shopping options, great dining options, and it also is the center for the park with access to all of the six other lands from this central location. The Tree of Life, at 14 stories tall and with more than 300 carvings of animals on it, may be the largest attraction here, but it is not the only reason to spend a few extra minutes discovering Discovery Island.
The Discovery Island Trails, which can be access from any number of ways around the Tree of Life, are beautifully landscaped and vegetated pathways that can be enjoyed at any time throughout your day. In addition to being shaded and secluded pathways along beautiful gardens, guests will be able to encounter unique animals along the trails, including Axis Deer, Blue & Yellow Macaws, Galapagos Tortoises, Greater Flamingos, Red Kangaroos, Ring-tailed Lemurs, White Storks and White-faced Whistling Ducks, among many more!
The Tree of Life is also home to another of the park’s most popular attractions, It’s Tough to be a Bug. Based on the popular Disney-Pixar movie “A Bug’s Life,” the attraction has had fans buzzing at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park since the park’s opening. Located inside the Tree of Life, this attraction has some of the best special effects of any 3-D show on property, making it a must-see for the entire family! It’s Tough to be a Bug fits in well with the theme of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, showing guests – from a very humorous perspective – just how tough it is to be a bug in this universe!
Discovery Island may be the center of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, but it is literally just the beginning of where the fun begins here.
