Flights of Wonder
Just as with everything else in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, the entertainment in the land of Asia is all about two things – animals and conservation. This section of the park’s main source of entertainment is the show Flights of Wonder, an approximately 25-minute performance that features professional bird handlers and over 20 species of trained exotic birds, including vultures, hawks and the American Bald Eagle.
Flights of Wonder takes place in the outdoor Caravan Stage Theater, which is elaborately themed to resemble the architecture found in the Himalayan highlands. Once inside, guests are greeted in two ways – first, by one of the animal trainers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and then with a swooping hello from some of the show’s very own winged guests. From there, the fun really begins, as the more than 20 species of birds display their natural abilities and talents, including singing and snatching things from an outstretched hand of someone in the audience. And, in true Disney fashion, a little bit of fun and humor is injected into the show via a performer named “Guano” Joe, who is a ‘local tour guide’ that stops by to help out the bird handlers.
Flights of Wonder is one of the most unique shows at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park because it actually stars animals, unlike the other popular entertainment options at this park, the Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo – The Musical. But, as it does center around the unpredictable nature of animals, you never know what exact cast of birds you will see in the show and what new things they might do. And, because of its residence on an outdoor stage, the weather can alter the show quite a bit and even cancel performances due to rain and/or lightning. The audience area is shaded, but that doesn’t mean that reverses the effects of another one of Mother Nature’s summertime occupants – the heat! So, if you are visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park during Central Florida’s warmer months, it might be best to get to the park early if you are interested in seeing this show to get the earliest possible viewing (and save the afternoon for the air-conditioned theaters!).
On that note, it is also important to remember to pick up a times guide each morning when you enter the park, no matter where you are at on the Walt Disney World Resort property. Each park’s respective times guides are specific to that park and are updated daily to give you important information such as times for the shows, parades, as well as park operating hours and other important pieces of information.
