Ghirardelli Downtown Disney® Marketplace
The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is one with a rich history of over 150 years in the chocolate-producing business. And while the famous chocolate company has been in business for that long, they have only been satisfying the sweet tooths of Walt Disney World® Resort guests since 1996, when they opened a retail store in the Downtown Disney® Marketplace.
The World of Disney® Store, the Downtown Disney® Marketplace’s busiest store, may be located right across a large sidewalk from Ghirardelli, but this decadent store comes in a close second in foot traffic. On most busy nights at the Downtown Disney® Marketplace, you will find this store buzzing with guests – and many times, lines out the door waiting for a tasty treat! Ghirardelli is divided into two separate parts – a retail store and an ice cream shop. In the retail store, you will find bag after bag of the famous Ghirardelli chocolates in their signature flavors, including solid squares and filled squares chocolates. The solid squares come in the milk chocolate, 60 percent Cacao dark chocolate and white chocolate with vanilla variety, while the filled squares come with flavors such as caramel, mint, peanut butter and raspberry fillings. During the holidays, Ghirardelli even produces limited edition squares with peppermint, eggnog and cinnamon spiced almond flavors. (Important tip – Ghirardelli gives away one free square per person throughout the day, so be sure to drop on in to the retail store to retrieve your free sample!) The retail store also sells espresso drinks, along with Ghirardelli baking products as well.
While the retail store may be the place to go for your chocolate fill, the adjacent ice cream and chocolate shop is really where the business is driven. Here, guests can choose from a variety of ice cream treats, such as a standard waffle cone dipped in chocolate to a milkshake or float. And while these treats are classics of any ice cream shop, what really sets Ghirardelli apart is its specialty sundaes! These may be on the more expensive side (ranging from seven to eight dollars) but they are well worth it and can easily feed more than one person. Some of the favorites include the cookie bottom sundae (half of a Ghirardelli chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, almonds and a cherry), the Gold Rush (vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and melted peanut butter throughout, topped with whipped cream, peanut halves, a cherry and a Ghirardelli chocolate square). Or, if you are up for the challenge, you might want to try the Earthquake, which has eight scoops of ice cream with eight different toppings (with a cool price tag of about thirty dollars).
The Downtown Disney® Marketplace is great because it is not only a place for families to visit throughout the day, but it is also a convenient way to end an evening as well.
