Hidden Mickeys around the Walt Disney World Resort
The Walt Disney World Resort has been known to create new fads throughout the years – think pin trading, park hopping – and, last but not least – hidden Mickey spotting. Hidden Mickeys are non-descript objects in and around the Walt Disney World Resort that form the shapes of Mickey heads. Legend has it that hidden Mickeys first started in the 1980’s in Epcot by Imagineers who thought it would be fun to add these objects in and around the park. After the idea caught fire – and the attention of guests who spotted this hidden homage to Mickey Mouse – Imagineers began to incorporate hidden Mickeys into every area of the Walt Disney World Resort, and still continue to do so today. And while there is no official “list” of hidden Mickeys, there are hundreds of web sites and even entire books devoted to the topic, and many people visit the parks solely in search of seeing these popular images and discovering never-before-seen hidden Mickeys. In fact, they are all across property, including at Downtown Disney, the water parks and even the golf courses at Walt Disney World. Here is a look at some of the most popular hidden Mickeys that aren’t in the parks that you won’t want to miss! - DisneyQuest, which is located at Downtown Disney, has several hidden Mickeys, including: in the carpet, in the track lighting on several floors on the ceiling and on several attractions (for example: in the queue for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride, look for the rightmost set of palm trees near the stairs – the coconuts on the palm trees form hidden Mickeys!)
- In the Candy Cauldron store, located at Downtown Disney’s West Side, a classic Mickey can be found in a dark marking on the upper wall above the candy display on the fake stones near the ceiling.
- In Goofy’s Candy Co. store in the Downtown Disney Marketplace, the mural on the upper part of the mall has hidden Mickeys in it, along with images of Goofy, Pluto and other characters.
- Near the Once Upon a Toy store in the Downtown Disney Marketplace, there are fountains that shoot up out of the ground. The spouts on the ground that the water plunges from are hidden Mickeys. Also, once this fountain shoots out and water collects on the cement, the giant puddle forms one big hidden Mickey! At night, this interactive fountain also forms one more hidden Mickey, as recessed lights in the cement make a classic Mickey shape.
- Outside of the Once Upon a Toy store, look for Lincoln Log replica columns with toy truck tires on top of the logs that form a hidden Mickey.
- In one of the display windows of the World of Disney store at the Marketplace, a map has continents in the shape of Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy.
- Near the Downtown Disney Marketplace entrance (from the parking lot) near the World of Disney, there is a large display including a fountain made of pots. One large pot empties into two smaller pots, making a hidden Mickey.
- On the Magnolia Golf Course at Walt Disney World, there is a large hidden Mickey sand trap on hole No. 6 located near Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
- The Walt Disney World Speedway has a lake in the infield that is shaped like a perfect hidden Mickey. It is tough to spot from ground level, but pictures from the sky reveal its shape!
This one may not be located near any of the parks, but on Interstate 4, which runs right beside the Walt Disney World Resort, there is a large hidden Mickey on top of an electrical transmission line pole just south of exit 62 near Celebration.
