Hidden Mickeys at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
The Walt Disney World Resort has been known to create new fads throughout the years – think pin trading, park hopping – and, last but not least – hidden Mickey spotting. Hidden Mickeys are non-descript objects in and around the Walt Disney World Resort that form the shapes of Mickey heads. Legend has it that hidden Mickeys first started in the 1980’s in Epcot by Imagineers who thought it would be fun to add these objects in and around the park. After the idea caught fire – and the attention of guests who spotted this hidden homage to Mickey Mouse – Imagineers began to incorporate hidden Mickeys into every area of the Walt Disney World Resort, and still continue to do so today. And while there is no official “list” of hidden Mickeys, there are hundreds of web sites and even entire books devoted on the topic, and many people visit the parks solely in search of seeing these popular images and discovering never-before-seen hidden Mickeys. While there are hundreds of hidden Mickeys littered around the four Walt Disney World theme parks, there are many that are highly recognizable to the Disney faithful. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is home to many of these hidden Mickey staples, as there are hidden Mickeys littered all around the park. In fact, one of the largest (if not THE largest) hidden Mickeys on property can be found at this theme park – but only from the sky! When the park first opened, the main entrance plaza (where Sorcerer Mickey’s hat is right now) was a large open circle, making his face (his smile was even made with darker areas of cement in the pavement), while the animation courtyard and the circular lagoon in front of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! formed the two ears. Renovation has since distorted this hidden Mickey, but there is no doubt that the Mouse played an integral part into the setup and design of this theme park. But before we set you out on a journey to spot these hidden Mickeys for yourself, it is important to remember that you are going to need tickets to access the Walt Disney World theme parks! Now that you have your tickets lined up, it is time to spot those hidden Mickeys! Below is a look at some of the most popular hidden Mickeys at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. On the Great Movie Ride, see if you can spot the following hidden Mickeys: at the end of the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” scene, look in the far left corner of the scene for a wall of hieroglyphics – Mickey and Donald are facing each other on the third row up from the floor; in the loading dock area, look for a hidden Mickey in the wall mural to the left side of the vehicle – pay special attention to the top floor window in the second to last house on the right; and, at the end of Gangster Alley, a silhouette of Mickey appears to the rear left of your vehicle in the rightmost window near the top of the Chemical Company building. - At the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, the following hidden Mickeys can be spotted: as you enter the building, you walk through a room with music group posters hanging on the wall – look below on the mosaic tile floor and spot two hidden Mickeys in the tile as you are about to leave the room; in the pre-show room, look for three coils of wire (sometimes on the floor, sometimes on the wall) that form the shape of a hidden Mickey; on the rear license plate of each limo vehicle, the year sticker in the upper right corner of the plate is a classic Mickey; and on the mural of Aerosmith outside of the entrance to the ride, the young boy in the front seat of the car is wearing Mickey ears, the guitar player is wearing a necklace with a hidden Mickey in gold, and Steve Tyler’s shirt is adorned with hidden Mickeys!
- The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is also full of hidden Mickeys, including: in the pre-show video, the little girl entering the elevator is holding a plush Mickey; also in the video, check out the hidden Mickey in the bell located to the upper left corner to the elevator behind Rod Serling in the movie; in the library in which you watch the pre-show video, look for music sheets on the far left of the room – one of the sheets has the song title: “What! No Mickey Mouse?”; after you exit the library and begin to queue in the line, look for a hidden Mickey water stain about eight feet up from the ground on the left brick wall right about where the line branches off into two separate lines; on your first stop of the ride, you will be facing a hallway where you see ghosts appear – look at the design above the archway and in the dead center is a hidden Mickey (the little girl is also still holding her Mickey plush when she appears as a ghost); and finally, as you are about to drop in your elevator on the 13th floor, there are stars that begin to disappear just before the doors open and you enter the elevator shaft – a perfect hidden Mickey appears for only a split second before the lights completely disappear!
- On the Radio Disney sign, which is located to the left of the Sounds Dangerous with Drew Carey attraction, the “o” in radio has a hidden Mickey in the center.
- Above the arcade games in Toy Story Pizza Planet, you can spot a hidden Mickey facing left in the moon near the top of the mural.
- On the Streets of America, there are murals both on San Francisco Street (at the end of the street in the lower left corner right below the words “News Stand”) and on New York Street (on the stack of newspapers a few feet away from the fake subway station) that have articles about Steamboat Willie with an accompanying picture!
