Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights
One of the key phrases that Walt Disney made famous about the Walt Disney World Resort was that “it all started with a mouse.” The same could be said about the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, except with this holiday spectacle, it all started with a father’s dream in the state of Arkansas.
Jennings Osborne, at the request of his daughter, wanted to decorate the exterior of his Little Rock, Ark., house for the holidays. However, this over-achieving dad did something that not even his own family expected, covering each and every square foot of their house and yard with Christmas lights, many of which had moving parts. As can be expected, word of the display traveled quickly throughout the area, causing a lot of traffic to come through the area just to see the colorful presentation. But with the extra traffic and bright lights, nearby neighbors also started complaining, leading Osborne to purchase the two houses on either side of him to appease them and allowing him to expand his collection. In 1994, however, the family’s house was deemed a public nuisance because of the then-three million lights display, but that didn’t even stop the proud father, as he continued to turn on the display each evening even though he was continuously fined by the court. Soon after in 1995, the Walt Disney Company reached an agreement with Osborne, bringing his ‘spectacle’ to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where it still stands today each holiday season.
The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights is presented beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving until just after the New Year every year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Streets of America in the backlot area of the park come alive with this presentation, which now includes over five million lights – and every single display came straight from the original light fixtures on the actual Osborne’s home in Arkansas! Beginning in 2006, the display took on a whole new theme, as the lights began to dance to choreographed holiday music every 15 minutes, adding to the popularity of this holiday classic even more. With the addition of “snow flakes” beating down on guests thanks to a touch of Disney magic, it is no wonder that the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights is still just as much of a smashing success as it was when Jennings Osborne first put it together in Arkansas more than 15 years ago!
