Pangani Forest Expedition Trail
There are many trails and pathways throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park that are made for guests to explore, such as the Maharajah Jungle Trek, the Discovery Trails and the Pangani Forest Expedition Trail. Located in Africa, the Pangani Forest Expedition Trail transports guests into the heart of a lush tropical rain forest to see animals that are native to Africa.
Located in the land of Africa right next to the Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Pangani Forest Expedition Trail takes guests through a series of exhibits and observation posts to see exotic animals in re-creations of their natural habitats. The first animal exhibit features Black and White Colobus Monkeys, a species that is being threatened by the destruction of rain forests in Africa. The next observation post features Okapi, a relative of the giraffe, and the Yellow-Backed Duiker, a member of the antelope family.
Upon leaving the observation post, guests enter into the first research building, home to Naked Mole Rats. Following a visit with these hairless creatures, guests happen upon the aviary and then to an open-air shelter with an underwater viewing area for hippos. Guests then enter through a grasslands area with Gerenuks and Meercats (just like Timon in “The Lion King”) before entering the grand finale of the Pangani Forest Expedition Trail, the Gorilla Research Camp. There are a couple different areas here in which to view the apes from – there is a large glass area that allows guests to view a family of apes, but if you venture out of this area, there is an open air section for viewing as well as a suspension bridge that has great views of a set of four male gorillas. The important thing to remember upon entering the gorilla zone is that this is a quiet area, and there are Cast Members stationed here to enforce this rule! It may be hard to keep a large group of people quiet, but it is important to keep your voices down to a minimum because if not, the gorillas will leave the area.
The Pangani Forest Expedition Trail takes about 20-30 minutes to completely walk through, but that number can go up or down depending on how long you stop to see each exhibit of animals. The end of the trail does come out at a convenient stop, right by the Wildlife Express Train, so you have quick access to Rafiki’s Planet Watch if you choose to go there.
As we mentioned before, the Pangani Forest Expedition Trail is just one of several exploration trails at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. These types of attractions typify what the park set out to do – promote animal conservation and allow guests to experience animals as they never have before.
