Studio Backlot Tour at Disneys Hollywood Studios
The Studio Backlot Tour is just another way that guests of Disney’s Hollywood Studios can go behind the scenes to get a look at all of the elements that go into making a Hollywood production. From filming a scene to seeing props from some of your favorite movies, this attraction is a great way to experience a little bit of the show business that Disney’s Hollywood Studios is based off of. The first part of the Studio Backlot Tour is a walking tour, and your first stop is at a film set called “Harbor Attack.” Here, volunteers are picked to play parts in a scene that is supposed to be an aerial attack on a ship on the water (similar to “Pearl Harbor”). After showing guests the tricks of the trade, the volunteers re-enact the scene and then everyone gets to watch the final product on TV screens set up in the queue area. From there, guests then walk through a props warehouse, where guests can view things that were used in movies such as “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “The Santa Clause.” After a tour of the props warehouse, the tour then shifts to a tram. Once on board, guests are taken past one of the park’s old icons, the Earful Tower, through a costuming and materials production warehouse and through a props boneyard, where planes, boats and other vehicles from movies lie for guests to see. The grand finale of the Studio Backlot Tour is a trip to Catastrophe Canyon, a movie set that is “on break from filming.” But, once inside, beware, as an earthquake hits, causing mass chaos inside the canyon, including a huge flood that races towards your tram! The Studio Backlot Tour has changed considerably throughout the years, partly to keep it fresh and partly because other attractions have been built around it. In fact, one of the most popular parts of the tram tour used to be Residential Street, which was home to the facades of the houses from the shows “The Golden Girls” and “Empty Nest” and was where all of the exterior shots for those shows were filmed. Those were removed a few years ago to make room for the Lights, Motors, Action! Stunt Show that now sits on part of the backlot.
