Taking the Kids to Disney
The Walt Disney World Resort is a great place for families of all kinds, whether that consists of adults only, parents with children or even grandparents with their grandchildren. In fact, grandparents have been bonding with their grandkids at Disney for years, giving parents a much-needed break at home while treating their grandchildren to the trip of a lifetime! Because a trip to Disney is a lot for anyone to undertake, grandparents with small children may need to take heed of the following tips, all of which can help slow down the pace of your vacation while optimizing the amount of fun you will have! - Stay at a resort that is kid-friendly. Grandparents will likely not be able to spend hours upon end in the Disney theme parks, so be sure that your resort has lots of kid-friendly activities, and especially a kid-friendly pool for your grandchildren to play at (the best pools for kids include Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort, which has the best pool on property, and the Disney All-Star and Pop Century Resorts). We highly recommend staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel because of the free transportation to and from the theme parks and from the Orlando International Airport, which can be a big help for any family!
- You also might want to consider staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel that has a kid’s club – those resorts include Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Disney’s Yacht Club, Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. At these clubs, childcare professionals will care for children with all sorts of games, DVDs, arts and crafts, food and endless amounts of entertainment. These can be a welcome respite for grandparents that need a bit of a break while still ensuring their grandchildren are in more than capable hands.
- Book a character dining meal. There are multiple character breakfasts, lunches and dinners around property where your entire family can dine with Mickey, Minnie and their pals. Young children especially love these meals and interactions, and most are not too much more expensive than regular meals on property. You can (and should) book these, and any other full service meal you plan on partaking in, 180 days in advance by calling (407) WDW-DINE.
- There are tons of activities for kids around Disney, so keep your eyes peeled for special children’s activities at your hotel or at other places nearby, such as the campfire sing-a-long at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. All Walt Disney World Resort guests can enjoy this campfire marshmallow roast for free, and there are even movies that are shown nightly on a projector screen as well to give you a fun (and free) evening activity away from the parks!
- Take afternoon breaks! Staying at a Disney park all day and night would tire out anyone, so plan on going to the parks early, taking a lengthy afternoon break (you might want to plan them around the afternoon parades, however) and then hitting up the parks again for the evening fireworks/parades shows, which you definitely do not want to miss!
- Go to one of the two Disney water parks. Both of Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Parks have excellent kids areas where your grandchildren can play and the grandparents can watch closely nearby!
