Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Perhaps the biggest attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios resides on Sunset Boulevard. Towering almost 200 feet above the rest of the park, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has been inducing screams here since July of 1994, when it became the first thrill ride to open up at the park. Based off of the hit TV series, the premise of this attraction features a re-make of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, where, as the ride warns, you enter “directly into your very own episode the The Twlight Zone."

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is themed as well as any ride at the Walt Disney World Resort, from the ominous facade of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, to the bellhops working the ride to the overgrown garden that the queue line runs through. The hotel’s lobby, where cobwebs are growing on the hotel’s furniture, serves as the final stop for guests before they are led into one of two rooms that serve as libraries. Once inside this small room (take a second to look around at the memorabilia before the lights go out), the TV in the corner suddenly comes to life, telling guests the story of The Twilight Zone and to proceed only if you dare. From that point, guests spill out into what appears to be a boiler room, where four different maintenance service elevators are waiting to take you to your final destination.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has evolved quite a bit from when it first opened. Back in 1994, the ride was pre-programmed, meaning that each and every ride featured the same signature drops. A few years ago, however, the ride was changed and a new computer system was added in with four different lift and drop patterns, meaning that you never know which ride you will get each time you step on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Two of the sequences feature drops at the beginning of the ride, while the other two shoot you skyward before dropping you a terrifying 13 stories. Each drop sequence does have one thing in common though – after the first big drop, the ride will lift you back to the top and the elevator doors will open, revealing a bird’s-eye view of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (this is also when your photo is taken), before the doors close and you plummet down once again.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is understandably one of the most popular attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so don’t be surprised if you find a long wait time here on any given day. For this reason, we suggest using Disney’s Fastpass Service for this highly-anticipated attraction.
