Just over a month since it’s opening, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios is already becoming one of the most popular rides in the park! This past month and a half has seen the new 3D ride with lines that wrap around the queue and plenty of smiling faces as guests leave the now famous dance party that ends the chaotic ride. The excitement is no doubt due to the new 3D elements and updated storyline that takes guests on a high-tech adventure with the popular characters from the film including super villain turned adoring dad Gru; his three adopted daughters Margo, Edith, Agnes and everybody’s favorite, the yellow-goggle-wearing mischievous minions. And if you haven’t had a chance to experience the despicable fun, here’s a quick look at the ride and what you’re missing:
There is no need to have seen Despicable Me to enjoy this new 3D adventure. While the ride incorporates the same antics and humor from the popular film, the plot is completely new which you’ll learn about in a 15-minute video while you wait in line. The video tells guests that Gru and his daughters have come to Universal Orlando to experience the park’s many thrills, attractions and shows. But don’t believe everything you hear! The villainous family has really come to Universal Studios to test out one of Gru’s new experiments that turns unsuspecting humans into little yellow minions!
The despicable adventure begins as you enter Gru’s living room where you pick up 3D-minion glasses and head to the “Minionization Prep Room.” Once inside, Gru begins the minion transformation by scanning new recruits for “human germs.” Once all clear, riders will board Minion Transformation Pods to begin their “minion training.” But just like in the hit film, things don’t go quite as Gru has planned and riders will be taken on a wild 4-minute adventure that includes falling into an antigravity recycling room, dodging a monster crusher, and many other thrilling and very real encounters.
The 3D ride culminates with a fun dance party where guests can show off their dance moves with fellow minions. The interactive celebration features a spinning disco ball overhead and large projection screens that allow guests to see themselves dancing away to the disco hit "Boogie Fever." After boogying with the minions, you’ll get the chance to walk through the ride’s souvenir shop the Super Silly Stuff Store and take a piece of the despicable fun home with you.
