If you’ve been to Halloween Horror Nights 22 at Universal Studios then you know how real the zombies, vampires, beasts and evil-doers can look. Thanks to incredible make-up, Universal Studios can take a regular Joe and transform him into a diabolical creature that makes you run for the hills. But you don’t have to wait until Halloween Horror Nights every year to witness some of the best and most horrific makeup you may ever see in person. Universal shows off its make-up talents, as well as special effects at the Horror Make-Up Show in the Hollywood area.
In this incredible live show, you’ll see how make-up artists and special effects artists create some of the best effects you see in Hollywood’s latest films. During the show, you’ll get to see movie clips, prop and creature make-up demonstrations and insight into the movie making process.
Before the show begins you’ll enter a lobby within a recreation of the Pantages Theater. Make sure you take a look around as the lobby features multiple displays on Universal’s many horror films including Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Psycho, Jaws, The Thing, Van Helsing, Bride of Chucky and An American Werewolf in London. You’ll also see some scary designs from classic Universal monsters including The Munsters and Halloween Horror Nights characters. After marveling at all of the horror films and monsters, guests will enter the theater.
Once inside you’ll be taken on a spooky and sometimes funny journey through Universal’s horror films where you’ll encounter popular Universal horror scenes and images beginning with a head animatronic of the possessed girl from The Exorcist as she turns her head around in a full circle just like in the film. Then, one of the hosts, Alex Ross enters the stage trying to find his co-host, Mark James. James suddenly appears with a large knife sticking out of his heart. He immediately clamors into the audience asking guests to “pull it out” before revealing that it is a fake. You’re then shown a montage of some of the goriest scenes from Universal’s horror films. The hosts then go on to reveal more horror props and tricks one that includes a pile of fake limbs, a knife and a vat of fake blood!
There is also a video clip about Leon Cheney (who was known for his groundbreaking artistry with makeup) and Universal’s make-up artist Jack Pierce, with Mark explaining how he created the designs for Universal’s classic monsters Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, Wolfman, The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein and more.
In between video clips, the hosts will recreate more incredible special effects to both entertain and gross you out.
