Towering high above Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure is the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the most iconic structure in the area. By now, most guests know that Hogwarts Castle is home to the thrilling ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey but not many know that the line to the ride also offers a unique look into the Castle without stepping foot on the roller coaster.
Here’s how it works: whether you want to ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or not, make sure you get into the ride’s line. Not only will you get to experience the immersive queue line for the roller coaster, but you’ll also get a tour of Hogwarts School like no muggle has ever experienced before!
All you have to do is tell the person handling the queue that you want to take the Hogwarts Castle tour, without riding the ride. That person will then direct you to the line for the tour that way you don’t accidentally take the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride. Once you’re in the correct line you’ll go through the tour at your own pace, exploring the Castle and all of its magic.
Passengers will first enter the castle through a dark dungeon. To the immediate right sits storage lockers. To the left the queue begins and some of the first things you encounter are the Mirror of Erised and a statue of the one-eyed witch. You then walk back out into the sunlight, under the cover of the castle greenhouse. The greenhouse is open-air and decorated with hanging greenery and even a few non-screaming mandrakes. As you explore the greenhouse, you’ll walk up ramps to the next level of the tour.
Here you’ll enter the castle again (and air-conditioning) where you’ll see a long hall that showcases statues of Hogwarts’ architecture and its first headmaster. There is also a curved room that shows off a golden statue of a hippogriff.
As you meander through the next rooms and corridors you’ll notice “living” paintings of the founders of Hogwarts’ four houses. Just like in the film, these paintings will be talking discussing everything from a lost dragon to contempt for a certain wizard nobody speaks of.
The talking portraits quiet as you enter Dumbeldore’s office. Once inside you’ll notice the headmaster is standing high above with a mythical glow around him just like you’d always imagined he would. He welcomes you to Hogwarts and you’re then ushered into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom where Harry, Ron and Hermione are listening to a boring lecture on the history of Hogwarts. In this room, you’ll see the cloak of invisibility, a giant skeleton and even inclement weather.
