You don’t have to travel to Hollywood to experience the excitement of filmmaking, actors and all things movies. Walt Disney World ® has created a ride that will take you through the history of film and right in the middle of the action of some of the most legendary movies and moments in film’s history. It’s called The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios ® and it’s nothing short of great!
Your trip through film history begins when you walk through the full-scale replica of Hollywood’s famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Once inside, you’ll get an up-close-and personal view of famous costumes, props and set pieces. The exhibit is rotational and has in the past included pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz.
You’ll then be ushered into a small pre-show room where you’ll get a chance to view a series of film trailers for the many films that are featured on the ride. The queue line ends at a pair of doors at the front of the theatre, which lead into a 1930’s themed Hollywood soundstage and to your theatre-styling ride vehicle. These vehicles feature an open cab in the first row of the front vehicle where a live tour guides stands operating the vehicle and providing narration throughout the ride.
Then it’s off to the movies! Using film footage, special effects and almost 50 lifelike audi-animatronic replicas of some of the biggest names and moments in Hollywood, you’ll go through the history of motion pictures, beginning with musicals where you’ll watch scenes from Busby Berkeley’s Footlight Parade followed by Gene Kelly swinging from a lamp post in Singing’ in the Rain and Julie Andrews singing on rooftops in Mary Poppins.
Then, watch for stray bullets as you enter the gangster flicks of the 1930’s with scenes from The Public Enemy. You’ll even encounter a gangster shoot out between live actors and audio-animatronic figures.
Then it’s to the Wild West as you see western movies’ most famous faces Clint Eastwood standing near a saloon and John Wayne sitting on top of a horse. From the Wild West to space, you’ll enter a spaceship and view scenes from Alien and see an audio-animatronic Ripley as she prepares to come face-to-face with the Alien.
Indiana Jones even makes an appearance as you drive through an ancient Egyptian temple filled with snakes where Jones and Sallah are trying to lift the Ark of the Covenant. Then, it’s scenes from Tarzan the Ape Man, Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz. The 22-minute ride through the movies ends with a three-minute video montage of more classic film moments.
