Whether you love to sing along to it or cringe when you hear the lyrics to “It’s a Small World,” Disney ® is celebrating the song and the ride’s 50th anniversary this week with a nice little “It’s a Small World” sing-along.
Fans of both the ride and the song will want to head at Walt Disney World ® Thursday to help belt out the iconic song in front of Cinderella Caste at Magic Kingdom ® during a “live global sing-along” on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Then at 2:45 p.m., Space Coast Disney fans can join the chorus and sing before the new Festival of Fantasy parade.
The “It’s a Small World” ride debuted on April 22, 1964 at the New York World’s Fair in a salute to UNICEF. Due to its popularity at the World’s Fair Walt Disney decided to turn it into a permanent attraction. The ride opened with audio animatronics of people from around the world with guests floating past them on small boats at Disneyland in California on May 28, 1966. Since then a version of the ride has been installed in all five Disney ® parks, where the song plays an estimated 1,200 times a day!
Walt Disney World’s ® version of “It’s a Small World” debuted in 1971 with the opening of Magic Kingdom ®. It featured that same catchy, love it or hate it theme song by Richard and Robert Sherman; same art direction by Mary Blair; and same authentic costumes by Alice and Marc Davis.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ride, the Walt Disney Co. will donate $150,000 To UNICEF. In addition for every video recorded and digital doll shared of the event, the Walt Disney World Company will make a donation to benefit UNICEF, up to $100,000."
'It's a Small World' has inspired hundreds of millions of people through its timeless theme," Tom Staggs, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman, stated in a press release. "Every moment of every day, there are Disney guests enjoying 'It's a Small World' somewhere around the globe.”
