Steampunk fans will be excited to learn that Walt Disney World ® is incorporating the unique design into several of Disney’s ® trading pins, vinylmation figures and even ear ornament hats!
If you’re not familiar with Steampunk it is a sub-genre combination of science fiction, characterized by a setting in which steam power predominates as the energy source for industrial technologies, inspired by industrial civilization during the 19th century. Therefore works of steampunk are set in an alternate history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West” in a future in which steam power has regained usage. The artistry is reminiscent of the technology of the machines you would find in an H.G. Wells or Jules Verne novel.
This isn’t the first time Walt Disney World ® has incorporated steampunk into their merchandise. In 2010, Disney ® artist Mike Sullivan released The Mechanical Kingdom which included five limited edition pins and a journal written by Professor Ludwig Von Drake that introduces the Mechanical Kingdom story. The journal looked convincingly like a book with a cover and several pages. The final page contained all five individual pins and two “completer pins” of Mickey Mouse and Pirate Pete.
Since then steampunk designs have found their way into Disney ® trading pins, Vinylmation figures and a D-Tech case for the iPhone 4/4S. And now Sullivan is adding to his design with a few new steampunk items, including recently released Vinylmation figures.
“I’m happy to finally see the Disney characters as Vinylmation figures wearing their steampunk attire,” explained Mike. “I created this artwork in 2009, and it’s been wonderful to see that it has inspired a variety of collectibles in recent years. For these new figures, I added a few accessories like Mickey Mouse’s ‘Steamboat Willie’ hat. Goofy was probably the most challenging figure to design, since he is tall. I created a stylized version of him in order to fit the three-inch, Mickey Mouse-shaped canvas.”
Guests can find these steampunk vinylmation figures in select locations throughout Walt Disney World ® and the Disney Parks online store.
There are also two new steampunk-inspired open edition pins arriving at both Disneyland Resort ® and Walt Disney World ® in November. And in 2013 steampunk fans can acquire the amazing ear hat ornaments. The seven new steampunk ornaments were designed by Disney Design Group artist Coasta Alavezos and are beyond gorgeous with intricate detail and bright, brassy colors!
