Tower of Terror Race returns to Disney

It’s baaaack! Walt Disney World® is bringing back a popular running event themed around The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

On Wednesday morning Disney® announced a new nighttime 10-mile race, scheduled for Sept. 29, 2012, that will take runners through Disney’s® Hollywood Studios™.

The course, Disney’s® first of that mileage, will take runners through the set of the “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show,” past Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat and finish near The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Finishers will receive a medal inspired by the Tower of Terror.

After the race, Disney® will welcome runners for a post-race party in the park featuring music, Disney characters and access to rides like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania! And of course the ride that’s central to the race’s theme – The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

This is the second The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race Disney has hosted. The first was a 13k in 2009. The new event will be dubbed The Twilight Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend.

The new Twilight Zone race will be held on the first weekend of the Epcot™ International Food and Wine Festival, which is normally when Disney® hosts one of its other races, the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.

To make room for the new running event, Wine & Dine is being pushed back to Nov. 9-10, the final weekend of the Food & Wine Festival.

In addition to the 10-mile race, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Weekend will also include a 5k, kid’s races and a Health & Fitness Expo at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

If you’re interested in running the 10-miler, registration opens on Feb. 14.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Weekend is just one of many future running events Disney® plans to incorporate in 2012. Faron Kelley, director of marketing for Disney Sports, hinted in an interview of a runDisney expansion in September.

"We're going to keep growing. I can't give you a lot of detail, but we are definitely looking at a fourth race at Walt Disney World®. If everything goes well out in California with (the Tinker Bell Half Marathon), I don't see why we wouldn't do another race out there. We want to grow internationally. We've got parks around the world and we are in discussions with all of them," he said at the time.

Walt Disney World® hosts several other running events throughout the year including half marathons, 5ks and even a marathon, which will be held on January 8th of this year.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race is the sixth runDisney event at Walt Disney World®. Disney® says more than 100,000 people participate in runDisney’s events on both coasts each year.
