When plotting your day at the Disney-MGM Studios, there are two attractions that immediately pop into everyone’s minds – the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. These two are located beside each other at the end of Sunset Boulevard, and understandably, have the longest wait times and are in the most congested area of the theme park. But, while you don’t want to miss the 13-story drop at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or the zero-to-sixty-in-under-two-seconds launch of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, there are other attractions that we suggest you take in at this park. They might be easy to miss, but they will be worth the trip, we promise!
The Great Movie Ride used to be the staple, the centerpiece, of the Disney-MGM Studios, before Sorcerer Mickey’s hat was built just inside the park’s main entrance. Now, the once-famed attraction is literally lost in the background, and is easy to pass right by without possibly knowing it was even there. But, this 22-minute tour is still a classic attraction at the park, and anyone wanting to take a journey back into time through scenes of classic and timeless movies will still enjoy the pageantry of this attraction.
Nearby, the Magic of Disney Animation is an also easy-to-miss attraction, While it has undergone many changes throughout the past few years, it still remains the shell of what used to be one of Disney’s working animation studios, and it still boasts a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of some of our favorite characters and an opportunity to learn how to draw one straight from a Disney animation artist, among other things, on this 35-minute walking tour. Anyone who is a big fan of Disney will love this attraction from start to finish!
Just outside of the Magic of Disney Animation is another classic attraction based off of one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. The Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a short production that condenses scenes from the film and plays them out with actors, puppets and special effects. The music is great, the story never gets old… so make sure to check this one out sometime during your day, especially if you have children with you!
Since the Disney-MGM Studios is all about Hollywood and a salute to the world of showbiz, it only makes sense that a lot of the attractions are dealing with behind-the-scenes looks at movies, or exhibits that feature actual props and costumes from TV and the movies (for more of that, visit the American Film Institute Showcase, also located at the Disney-MGM Studios). And, one of the newest up-close and personal looks at a Hollywood blockbuster is located here as well, at the Journey Into Narnia: Creating The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Here, guests can learn about the making of the live-action film in the form of a walking tour, and then enjoy Narnia up-close as you view costumes, creatures and props that were actually used in the film.
And finally, our last can’t-miss for Disney buffs is Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream. This attraction opened during Walt’s 100th birthday celebration, and this self-paced walking tour gives tribute to the man who started Walt Disney World with an extensive amount of memorabilia and historic information. While this, and the other attractions listed above, may not have the same affect on you as the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it will give you a greater sense of what this park is truly all about and the vision that the Disney-MGM Studios was built around.
