If you ever wish you could be part of the world of The Little Mermaid, you’ll love Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid! This fun, dark ride attraction takes you through the story of the famous Disney classic film. Today we’re sharing 5 bubbly facts about this Magic Kingdom attraction!

New Fantasyland
Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid opened with New Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom on December 6, 2012. The attraction also opened in Disney California Adventure as The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Undersea Adventure the year before on June 3, 2011.  This was the first ride-through attraction dedicated to the 1989 Disney animated classic, featuring Ariel, Sebastian, Eric, and more!

Nods To 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
This attraction rests where a beloved previous attraction, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, once did. Although the attraction closed in 1994, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea lives on with a fun Easter egg in the Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid queue. If you pay close attention to the rock formations throughout the queue you may notice an imprint of the Nautilus submarine on one of the massive rocks right before you go inside.

Disney Imagineers also bottled up some of the water from the previous attraction when they began to dismantle it. During the Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid ride opening, the bottle of water from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was poured into the new attraction’s water, connecting the old and new!

Amazing Animatronics
Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid has an outstanding number of animatronics. There are almost 200 animatronics throughout the attraction, including 128 figures in the Under the Sea scene alone! 50 of those animatronics in that scene are spinning starfish. This attraction also required special skin technology to be created for animatronics like Ariel, Ursula, and King Triton, who show a lot of skin. Lastly, Ursula’s animatronic is pretty large. At 7.5 feet tall and 12 feet wide, she makes a big impression on guests during the ride!

Hidden Mickey
One of the most impressive Hidden Mickeys in Walt Disney World is located within this attraction’s queue. It can only be seen on Mickey Mouse’s birthday, November 18 at noon! Disney Imagineers carved part of the rock formation in the queue to allow the sun to shine through on the dark rock wall. This special birthday Hidden Mickey can only be seen for about 7 minutes, so if you find yourself in Magic Kingdom on Mickey’s birthday go check it out!

In A Clam Shell
Your entire journey takes place in multi-colored pastel clam shells using the Omnimover ride system. This ride system was originally created by Walt Disney Imagineers in the 1960’s and was used for attractions like The Haunted Mansion! The attraction may seem to move quickly through the story, but the ride duration is actually 5.5 minutes long. This makes Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid’s ride duration twice as long as Peter Pan’s Flight!

Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid is a fun ride for the whole family. From the colorful details and amazing animatronics to the unforgettable soundtrack, this attraction is definitely a must do! So next time you’re spending time in New Fantasyland, don’t forget to travel under the sea with Ariel and friends.
